Exclusive: Giant Magical Otters Invade New Hex Vet Graphic Novel | News
Today we have some breaking news: BOOM! Studios has a new volume of Hex Vets coming our way, and this one features giant magical otters! Hex Vets: The River Guardian, by Sam Davies and Lisa Moore, is the third volume of Hex Vets, the series about two young witches who are also magical vets. We broke the news of the first and second books in the series, so we’re keeping the streak up with number three! It will be published under the KaBOOM! kids’ imprint on September 18, 2024, in comic shops and September 24 in bookstores and everywhere else. Here’s the plot summary:
A seemingly normal day at the clinic turns strange during a visit from a magical creature making wild prophecies–when he usually just predicts the weather and helps find lost household items and the arrival of the River Guardian’s otter messengers!
Nan and Clarion discover something in the water is making river creatures, both magical and normal, behave in odd ways. Beavers build elaborate wood houses teetering on the edge of collapse, kelpies cast aside their magical disguises when trying lure people to the water, and ice swans make ear-piercing mating calls and freeze chunks of water solid–all similar to the creature at the clinic. The creature’s owner may have something to do with this whimsical madness, so Nan and Clarion must quickly work together to brew a solution and set things right!
Nickelodeon is developing a HexVets animated series, which is slated to debut sometime this year, so we will probably be hearing more about these characters soon. For now, we leave you with these words of wisdom from creator Sam Davies (who is also the creator of the delightful wordless webcomic Stutterhug): “I’m so happy to have finally got giant magical otters into a comic. What story wouldn’t be improved by giant magical otters??”
