The Picks:

Phineas & Ferb Early Comic Reader #1 – Phineas & Ferb Early Comic Reader #1 – This new series from Disney Press is based on the popular cartoon on the Disney Channel and XD. Phineas and Ferb and best friends and step brothers, trying to make every day special while avoiding their sister Candace who is determined to expose their schemes to their mother . In this first issue, the boys turn a swimming pool into gelatin for lots of fun, but it gets hit by a ray from Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s newest device which is designed to turn every it hits evil. It’s up to them to stop the gelatin monster and save Candace. And then Agent P is forced to team up with Agent Double 00, who doesn’t have much respect for him. While Phineas and Ferb is marketed to boys, girls who enjoy the TV series will also enjoy the books. Elementary schools looking for titles to attract younger male readers will want to check this series out.

Okimono Kimono – CLAMP is a well-known group of manga creators, but they have other interests as well. Artist Mokona loves kimonos and shares her love in this illustrated book from Dark Horse. It’s filled with designs and drawings of tradition Japanese kimonos and kimono accessories. Also included are interviews (including Ami from Puffy Ami Yumi) and even some short manga stories! Kids interested in fashion and/or Japanese culture  will find a lot to like in this book, as will fans of CLAMP’s work. This title would be most appropriate for older elementary and middle school students and up.
