Review: They Called Us Enemy

I have been looking forward to the publication of this graphic novel for a very long time. It did not disappoint in the least bit.

Coming Attractions: Graphic Novels at Book Expo 2019

NYC Book Expo 2019 has come to a close. And while it ran for 3 days, piggybacked by Book Con, at the Jacob Javitz center in NYC, I was only able to attend 1 day. I would have surely enjoyed another day, and would have probably seen so much more, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and came home with piles of books to read.

Ghosts: A Not-So-Scary Roundup

It’s that time of year, when we start thinking about ghosts and goblins and jack-o-lanterns and things that go bump in the night. There are plenty of comics and graphic novels with ghosts in them, but not all are scary. Here are some great reads that happen to have spirits in them. Ghosts by Raina […]

Review: ‘Mechaboys’

April 3, 2018 by J. Caleb Mozzocco

Mechaboys Writer/artist: James Kochalka Top Shelf Productions; $19.99 The unbelievably prolific cartoonist James Kochalka has a new original graphic novel, this one leaning more in the direction of his adult work, like SuperF*ckers and American Elf, than his kids comics, like SpongeBob Comics, Johnny Boo, and Dragon Puncher. The premise is a solid, grabby and […]

Review: ‘Home Time’

January 2, 2018 by J. Caleb Mozzocco

Home Time Writer/artist: Campbell Whyte Top Shelf Productions; $24.99 Throughout C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, school children stumble into a fantasy world, where they are hailed as prophesied saviors, arriving just when they are needed to stave off one great evil or another. In cartoonist Campbell Whyte’s Home Time, school children stumble into a […]

Review: ‘Spacebat and The Fugitives: Tacos @ The End of the World’

November 6, 2017 by J. Caleb Mozzocco

Spacebat and The Fugitives: Tacos @ The End of the World Writer/artist: Chris Sheridan Top Shelf Productions; $14.99 First of all, don’t confuse Spacebat with Space Bat. The former is the main character in a new all-ages sci-fi adventure comic from Motorcycle Samurai‘s Chris Sheridan. The latter is the bat who was seen clinging to […]

Review: ‘Surfside Girls: The Secret of Danger Point’

August 30, 2017 by J. Caleb Mozzocco

Surfside Girls: The Secret of Danger Point Writer/artist: Kim Dwinell Top Shelf Productions; $19.99 Former real-life surfside girl turned animator Kim Dwinell makes her graphic novel debut with a pretty powerful argument for the old saw that you should write (and, here, draw) what you know. Surfside Girls: The Secret of Danger Point is a […]

Review: ‘Johnny Boo Goes Like This’

October 20, 2016 by J. Caleb Mozzocco

Johnny Boo Goes Like This Writer/artist: James Kochalka Top Shelf Productions; $9.99 James Kochalka has a special facility for stream-of-conscious storytelling that mimics the sorts of stories small children might tell adults: This happened, and this happened, and then this happened, and so on. It’s a relatively rare quality, even among those who make their […]
