The Picks:

Hikaru In The Light Volume 1 GN – Scholastic continues its foray into manga with a new series for Graphix. Middle-school student Hikaru Ogino works at her family’s bathhouse in Tokyo. Known as the songbird, her beautiful voice echoes through the bathhouse as she goes from room to room, cleaning up after school, dreaming of holding a microphone, not a mop! When Ran, her best friend and a former girl group idol, invites her to try out for a pop star survival camp with her, Hikaru jumps at the chance of a lifetime! Ready to put her talents to the test, Hikaru must outshine the competition to make her stage debut! It’s great to see more middle school manga coming out. Fans of K-On!, The Tryout and The Baby-Sitters Club will love this new series.

Speak Up Santiago GN – Random House Graphic releases a new series about friends, family, community and identity. 12-year-old New York City kid Santi is heading upstate to Hillside Valley to spend the summer with his Abuela. He is excited to meet the local kids, eat his Abuela’s delicious food and go exploring. His only problem is that he doesn’t speak Spanish that well while it feels like everyone he meets does. In between the adventures he goes on with his new friends Sol, Willie, Alejandro and Nico, Santi can’t help but worry about his Spanish. What if he can’t keep up? Is he not Colombian enough if he can’t? Santi must find his confidence and his voice, or else his worries could cost him his new friendships, and the chance to play in Hillside’s summer soccer tournament! This new series is perfect for fans of Mexikid and the Click series.
