The Picks:

Swing GN – Feiwel and Friends debuts a new graphic novel that challenges gender norms. Marcus McCalister wants to fit in. So much so that, despite not liking soccer, or his childhood friend Ted all that much, he continues to play on the soccer team. Izzy Briggs is the opposite. She wants to stand out, making bold fashion choices as an aspiring designer which gets her labeled the “weird kid.” But when Izzy and Marcus are paired together to perform a swing dance routine for a gym project, everything goes up in flames, including their grade in the class. They get a second chance when their gym teacher proposes a deal. If they perform the swing routine in the upcoming talent show, they’ll receive extra credit and a passing grade. They accept, but Izzy has an additional condition for Marcus; she gets to lead this time. Middle grade readers will enjoy this reflective coming-of-age story.

Science Comics Human Spaceflight Rockets And Rivalry GN – First Second Books continues their Science Comics with a topic many of the readers’ parents and grandparents lived through: the Space Race. The Space Race between the US and USSR began as soon as humans figured out how to launch rockets into orbit. Competing to be the first to fly outside of Earth’s atmosphere, walk on the moon, and build a working lab in orbit pushed both sides to achievements that increased their knowledge of science and technology and also changed things on the ground. Readers will learn how to travel at 17,500 mph, take a shower with no water, and go to the bathroom when there’s no gravity! The wonders of spaceflight will delight and inform readers both old and young.
