Children of the Phoenix: The Tomb Planet | News
Papercutz has released the details on the third volume of Oskar Källner and Karl Johnsson’s illustrated novel series Children of the Phoenix, and it looks like this volume will be darker than the first two (for more on those, see our posts on the first and second volumes). Children of the Phoenix: The Tomb Planet will be released on December 3, 2024, and like the first two, it’s rated (by the publisher) for ages 7-12. The creators both had interesting comments on this one:
Sometimes I call The Tomb Planet cosmic horror for kids. It’s indeed full of adventure, strange places and scary monsters, but the ambition has also been to create a story about facing something infinitely larger than oneself. Refusing to quit in the face of darkness. To come together and fight, and to find that there is always hope.
Oskar Källner
When I worked on the images for The Tomb Planet, I wanted them to be both eerie and mysterious, but at the same time not to lose the sense of wonder that permeates The Children of the Phoenix. This planet is dark and rusty, but also colorful and beautiful. This book is much more frightening than the first two and I think the children will like the fact that we’ve gone out on a limb and not held back. For example, I got to design a space monster that is probably the scariest monster I have ever drawn.
Karl Johnsson
It looks like the first two volumes will both be released on July 9, 2024. All three will be paperbacks priced at $14.99.
