The Picks:
Scarygirl: The Origin Story GN – Allen and Unwin releases the original story of the popular character Scarygirl. Abandoned at the house of Blister, a kind and intelligent giant octopus, Scarygirl doesn’t know who she is or where she’s from. Blister wants to keep his friend safe, but Scarygirl’s dreams are haunted by a strange man, and she needs answers. When Bunniguru can give her the answers, she leaves the beach to embark on a journey to the city. Along the way she encounters wily forest dwellers as she heads to Dr. Maybee’s laboratory, where she hopes to find the secrets of her past—or will his dark forces overpower her? This volume details Scarygirl’s first adventure and features pages from her creator’s sketchbook.
Macab Death Princess GN – Phoenix Studios debuts the newest princess in the Native and Latina Princesses series. Macab lives in the world of reincarnation where her mother runs a hotel that allows spirits to relax and rejuvenate before taking their next step. Macab can’t wait to take over her family’s business and is excited to help. Her mother tries to teach her patience and the proper hotel protocol, but Macab doesn’t listen. When she lets a guest leave early, it causes an imbalance in the system. In order to fix it, Macab secretly travels to earth with her familiar, a crow named Sable, who acts as Macab’s guide as she learns what life on Earth is really like. This volume is a great addition to any middle grade graphic novel library.
