Scholastic Announces First Graphix Manga, Remaking Tezuka Classic | News
Scholastic announced that they will be releasing Unico: Awakening, a remake of Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga, in August 2024. This is the first manga under their Graphix imprint. Plans include four volumes, an activity book, and a handbook.
Unico: Awakening will be published in color and printed from left to right. The reinvention follows a young unicorn — who’s hopeful, funny, and good-hearted — after he’s banished from the heavens and adventures from era to era, helping others as he goes. The character was originally published in 1976, written and drawn by Tezuka.

The reworking will be written by Samuel Sattin (Buzzing, The Kids Guide to Anime and Manga) and illustrated by Gurihiru (Superman Smashes the Klan, Avatar: The Last Airbender). This team previously ran a successful (goal met in 24 hours) 2022 crowdfunding effort for the project. Those books will still be issued, now as a “limited Kickstarter edition” that “will include exclusive material that will not be published in the Scholastic edition, including all of the art prints from the campaign” and will come out earlier.
Unico: Awakening is rated for ages 8-12 and goes on sale August 6, 2024.
