Mech Cadets #2 | Exclusive Preview

Main cover of Mech Cadets #2

Today we have an exclusive first look at Mech Cadets #2, the second issue of the new series by writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa. This series is a followup to Mech Cadet Yu, by the same creative team, which has been adapted into an animated series that just premiered last week on Netflix. Mech Cadet Yu was a 12-issue comic series that was then collected into three volumes; in May, BOOM! Studios published a collected edition of the full run of that series, titled Mech Cadets Book One, so it’s obvious that this new series is a continuation of the original story.

The story is set at a training academy in Arizona where young cadets learn to pilot giant robots (similar to the mechs in Neon Genesis Evangelion and other manga and anime). In this story, the mechs are space aliens who come to earth to bond with their pilots, the cadets. In Mech Cadet Yu, one of the mechs unexpectedly chose Stanford Yu, who was not a cadet but the son of the school’s janitor, as its pilot, and the series followed Yu’s training as an underdog in the elite academy, as he bonds with his mech, gets to know his classmates, and fights the alien menace, the Sharg.

The new series continues the cadets’ adventures; here’s the publisher’s description of issue #2:

The cadets don’t know what’s in store for them when they discover a Sharg prison! But solemnity strikes as the battles rage and our heroes and even their Robos have tragedy in store. And as all feels hopeless, Hero Force Two comes under attack, and an unexpected ally will make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good…

The issue will be out on September 13, but we’ve got the start of it right here, along with two variant covers by InHyuk Lee and Qistina Khalidah. Enjoy!
