Saving Chupie GN – Harper Alley debuts a supernatural island adventure inspired by Puerto Rican culture and lore. After the destruction wrought by Hurricane Maria, Violeta Rubio’s Abuelita’s beloved restaurant La Casita needs help reopening. Violeta’s whole family travels to Puerto Rico to help. She is determined to contribute, but the rest of the family thinks they can do it without her. With nothing to do, she meets the best friend duo Diego and Lorena, who need help capturing the rumored chupacabra. She unexpectedly runs into the beast, only to discover he isn’t as monstrous as everyone thinks. But there are international smugglers and monster hunters who are also after Chupie. Violeta must find a way to keep Chupie hidden and convince her new friends he isn’t anything to be scared of, but saving Chupie may mean sacrificing everything else in the process. With bright, vibrant art and the cutest chupacabra ever, middle school readers will love this new title.

Team Trash A Time Traveler’s Guide To Sustainability GN – Holiday House continues their series of books designed to inspire young people to care for the planet with this newest entry. Charlie, a studious environmentalist, wants to save the planet. But she is stuck with science fair partner Oliver who only wants to doodle in his notebook. A mechanical mishap sends them traveling back in time, where they’ll have to work as a team to return to the present day. To do so, they must gather data on recycling through the ages, but the closer they get to the present, the more they see plastic as a problem. Charlie and Oliver need to discover ways to use their sustainability knowledge to return home and build a better Earth. Filled with accessible activist solutions, sustainability tips, and an optimistic look into how modern scientists are combating waste, this sweeping adventure will entertain and educate middle school readers and maybe inspire them to help bring about change.
