The Picks:

Occulted GN – Iron Circus Comics releases a graphic memoir about the power of literary freedom. In 1997, the comet Hale-Bopp soared across the sky. To Amy Rose, who was raised in a cult located near the Heaven’s Gate compound, it was supposed to be the start of an amazing new future. Instead, it brought news of a horrible tragedy. Sent away from her mother and the temple by the acerbic and emotionally manipulative leader, Amy lived off-site, forbidden from going to school or visiting the library because the leader told her there was nothing to learn about a world that was going to end. But with news of the deaths, Amy heard a new word that explained everything: cult. Risking everything, she goes on secret trips to an abandoned, off-limits library that teaches her everything she was not meant to know. That the community she grew up in was built on a lie, and that to escape, banned books could give her all the information she needed to escape. This inspiring tale of bravery and rebellion is just what readers need right now.

Eerie Tales From The School Of Screams GN – First Second Books releases a middle grade horror anthology that will scare and delight. Davis and Emily know that school can not only be tough and scary, but also eerie. But it’s not because of the tough tests or merciless vice principal. School is scary because their teacher wants her students to present the spookiest, most chilling stories they can think of to the class. With five horrifying stories, including “The Face in the Forest” and “The Village that Vanished,” readers should be ready to have their skeletons scared out of their skin! Fans of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Goosebumps! will love this new anthology.
