The Picks:
Out There GN – Little Brown Ink releases a graphic novel that is really out there. Julia didn’t always believe in aliens, but her father, who believes he was abducted by aliens, has convinced her otherwise. He is so obsessed with extraterrestrial beings that when the 75th anniversary of the infamous UFO crash in New Mexico rolls around he plans a weekend trip to Roswell, where he expects the aliens to make contact. Julia decides to join her dad and turns down a dream vacation to Hawaii with her best Sara. But amid the alien-themed goofiness of the festival, Julia is starting to find she isn’t so sure her father was really abducted. His memories of alien interference are getting increasingly shaky, along with her faith in him. A weekend that was supposed to bring the father and daughter closer together may actually drive them apart. Touching on themes of family, loyalty, and supporting the ones we love, this title will appeal to middle school readers.
Styx And Scones Ready To Read The Sticky Wand GN – Simon Spotlight debuts a new series in their Ready-to-Read Graphics series. Styx the cat and Scones the dog are the pets of two friendly witches. When Scones finds a wand one of the witches accidentally left out, he thinks it’s a stick and wants to play with it. Styx joins in on the fun, and soon Scones is turning Styx into a squirrel, butterfly and even a giraffe! The unpredictable bursts of magic are everywhere! But the duo will need to clean up their magical mess before the witches find out! This story of magical mischief will not only entertain early readers but is a great introduction to the graphic novel format.
