The Picks:
Hoops GN – Candlewick Press releases a graphic novel inspired by a true story. It is 1975 in Indiana, and the Wilkins Regional High School girl’s basketball team is in their rookie season. Despite having to practice at night in the elementary school and playing to empty bleachers, the girls are undefeated. The Lady Bears don’t have buses to deliver them to away games and they have no uniforms. They are their own laundry service. With t-shirts and electrical tape, they’ve made their own uniforms and go to their games in a Winnebego motorhome. But with help from a committed female coach, they continue to win again and again, despite the odds. Illustrating the ongoing battle of women striving for equality in sports, this story is filled with honesty, bravery, and heart. It would make a great addition for any Women’s History collection.

Bea Wolf GN – First Second spins the story of Beowulf into a modern middle-grade graphic novel. For generations, children have partied in the kid-forged sanctuary of Treeheart, located somewhere in a generic suburb. But when the merrymaking disturbs Mr. Grindle, their joyless adult neighbor, the kids’ fun is cut short. Grindle, the guardian of gloom, lays siege to Treeheart, using his power to transform happy children into sullen adults! The survivors of the onslaught call out for help—and are answered by a warrior with an unbreakable will and an appetite for mischief that is unbounded. It is Bea Wolf. Told in iambic alliterations and illustrated in finely drawn black and white, this retelling of the oldest surviving English poem will delight readers both young and old.
