The Picks:
Akim Aliu Dreamer A Graphic Memoir GN – Graphix releases a graphic memoir of Akim Aliu, professional athlete and activist. Akim Aliu’s journey to making his dreams come true started on a difficult path. Born to mixed race parents, he was the only black child in his Ukrainian community, and his family’s move to Toronto, Canada didn’t improve things, as he faced systemic racism at every turn. But it was there that he discovered hockey, a sport he excelled at. Despite being hazed, enduring racial slurs and physical attacks, he never gave up on his dream to play professionally, giving him the nickname “Dreamer.” This graphic memoir tells Akim’s incredible story and is a must for any graphic novel collection.
Bigfoot And Nessie Volume 1 The Art Of Getting Noticed GN – Penguin Workshop introduces an unlikely pair of cryptids who become friends. Bigfoot is having trouble fitting in with this family. He just can’t get caught on film! The rest of his family, his mom, dad, and sister, always want to be in the spotlight, and his inability to get himself in a picture has led to much disappointment from them. Meanwhile, Nessie just can’t seem to get out of the spotlight. She is just as desperate to get away from the cameras as he is to get in front of them. When they meet and become friends, Bigfoot is left asking himself the ultimate question: What’s the price of fame after all? Beginning readers will enjoy this big-hearted and clever story of friendship and creativity.
