The Picks:

Amelia Erroway Volume 1 Castaway Commander GN – Graphix takes a flight of fancy with their new series. Amelia Erroway yearns to command her own airship, but her overprotective father has forbidden her to become a pilot. Determined to prove herself, she sets off alone on her father’s prized craft. She flies into a fierce storm and crashes the ship in uncharted lands. Amelia, now a castaway, must use her wits to survive. Assisted by the brothers Rastor and Fynley, who live deep in Juniper forest, Amelia, with her newly formed crew, is determined to repair the airship and fly home. Filled with adventure and science-minded characters, this new series is sure to delight middle school readers.

Big Apple Diaries GN – Roaring Brook Press commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9-11 with a graphic memoir. Twelve-year-old Alyssa is a young New Yorker who is doodling her way through middle school. Her time is split between her dad’s apartment in Manhattan and her mom’s new place in Queens, while she navigates the trials and tribulations of middle school and an epic crush on a new classmate. She records all her highs and lows in doodles in a diary. But, after the Twin Towers fall on September 11, 2001, and so many lives are lost, worries about gossip and boys feel distant and insignificant. Alyssa must now find a way to deal with these abrupt changes to her life. She needs to find a new sense of self and purpose amidst all the chaos and find the strength to move forward with hope. Ranging from lighthearted comedy to poignant reflection, this graphic memoir appeals to its audience.
