The Picks:
Jukebox GN – First Second releases the newest graphic novel from Nidhi Chanani, creator of Pashmina. Shaheen’s father has abruptly disappeared. The only clues she and her cousin Tannaz have are a mysterious jukebox, old vinyl records, and cryptic notes on music history. As they try to decipher the clues, the jukebox starts glowing, and the girls are transported to another time, keyed to the music on the record. They are sent to decade after decade of music history, from political marches, to landmark concerts. They need to find Shaheen’s dad before the music stops. Chanani delivers another story about family and friendship while also taking readers on a time-bending magical mystery tour of music history.
Ghoul Next Door GN – Harper Alley delivers some summertime spookiness. Eleven-year-old Grey lives in the legend-haunted New England town of Ander’s Landing. He’s been feeling like a pair of eyes is watching his every move, and he begins to find gifts left for him from the graveyard, like art carved from bones or jewelry made from (hopefully not human) remains. When he discovers his secret admirer, she turns out to be a ghoul, a race of reclusive subterranean creatures who eat the dead! An unlikely friendship forms between him and Lavinia, but when it breaks traditions, Grey gets caught up in something bigger than he could ever have imagined—and the punishment is a fate worse than death. Both fun and creepy, this title will hook middle school readers.
