The Picks:

Legend Of Auntie Po GN – Kokila, an imprint of Penguin Random House, releases a graphic novel that is part historical fiction and part magical realism. Thirteen-year-old Mei lives and works in a Sierra Nevada logging camp in 1885. Aware of the racial tumult in the years after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Mei, the daughter of a Chinese immigrant, anchors herself with stories of the reimagined myths of Paul Bunyan as Po Pan Yin (Auntie Po), an elderly Chinese matriarch. Through these stories, she navigates the difficulty and politics of the lumber camp and her growing romantic feelings for her friend Bee, the camp foreman’s daughter. This graphic novel is about immigrant families and communities holding on to rituals and traditions as well as who gets to own a myth.

Magic Tree House Volume 1 Dinosaurs Before Dark – Random House Books For Young Readers turns the well known chapter book into a graphic novel. Jack and Annie discover a mysterious tree house in the woods. Before they can find out where it came from, they are whisked back in time to the prehistoric period. They are saved by a Pteranodon from a Tyrannosaurus, and they must now figure out how to get back home before dark or else become a dinosaur’s dinner. Relive all of the magic, mystery, and time-travel in this first adventure in the long running series.
