The Picks:
Just Pretend GN – Little Brown Book for Young Readers releases a graphic memoir about fractured families and learning to cope. Since her parents’ divorce, Tori has had to live in both her mom’s house and her dad’s new apartment. In both places, she’s treated like a kid. At school, her friendships feel more and more out of her hands. The only thing saving her are her books and her writing. It’s the stories she makes up in her head that help her cope as everything else around her falls apart. Just Pretend is a relatable tale of many of the commonplace but complex issues of fractured families, lost and found friends, and growing up.
Misadventurers #1 – Scout Comics’ imprint Scoot releases a tale of two misfits that must work together to get home. Jimminy, a half-ling magician, is expelled from the International Bureau of Sorcery for misbehavior, to the farthest reaches of the nether-earth. There he meets Marius, a gruff Viking princess who was exiled from the Land of Stonia for bullying the boys on the siege squad. The pair agree to set aside their differences and team up to find a way home. However, their path is fraught with mischievous perils and zany villains they must overcome in order to return home. And they may not be alone, as a mysterious presence is secretly trailing them. But is it friend or foe? Filled with both comedy and adventure, this is a great title for middle grade readers.
