The Picks:

Big Ideas That Changed The World: A Shot In The Arm – Amulet Books looks at public health’s greatest achievement. The history of vaccinations is the story of the struggle to protect people from infectious diseases. Beginning with humankind’s greatest affliction to date, smallpox, and concluding with an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic, author Don Brown traces the evolution of vaccines, as narrated by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who popularized inoculation in England in the early 18th century. This book examines deadly diseases such as measles, polio, anthrax, rabies, cholera and influenza, as well as the achievements of scientists including Louis Pasteur, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, and Edward Jenner, the “father of immunology.” It tackles the science behind how our immune systems work, the discovery of bacteria, well as the public and political response to vaccination throughout history, such as the anti-vaccination movement. This title is a must for every library science shelf.

Night Marchers And Other Oceanian Tales – Iron Circus Comics continues their Cautionary Fables and Fairytales series with tales from Oceania. This fourth volume contains 17 stories from the folklore of the Pacific that range in tone from sweet to funny to menacing. These lesser known myths and legends from the Philippines, New Zealand, Hawaii, and beyond include ghostly warriors, angry gods, and monstrous tyrants. The tales are reimagined with a variety of artistic styles that give them a modern twist. Readers with a love for mythology will enjoy these retold tales.
