The Picks:

One Year At Ellsmere GN – First Second revamps a middle-grade favorite series. Juniper wins a scholarship to the prestigious Ellsmere Academy, but it’s not the scholastic utopia the studious thirteen-year-old expected. The school’s queen bee has singled her out, labeling her a “special project, and is out to destroy her. And the forest next to the school is rumored to have a mythical beast roaming in it. It’s best to find a friend to get through it all. Luckily, Juniper has her roommate Cassie, who’s budding friendship makes the hardships tolerable. This book about friendship and kindness has found a new lease on life from creator Faith Erin Hicks, with a complete re-inking and now in full color. It’s ready for a whole new generation to pick up and enjoy.

Peng Action Sports Adventures GN – Oni Press introduces a new kind of sports adventure comic. In a world obsessed with even the most marginal sports, the All-World School of Sportsmanship is where kids from all over go to train to become the best athletes. Students Rocky, Sassy, Ven, and Radley, also known as the FOOT KNUX, work together to master some of the more “fringe” action-packed sports. From kickball, to breakdancing to hacky sack, these kids will battle boredom, the sun in their eyes, and their own self-doubt. They will also take on strange and unusual baddies like the Aurora Skeddos and The Biter, mystical foes who are also vying for victory. With a little love and luck, the FOOT KNUX will master their sports, and may just win the game. Peng has all the sports action to please any middle grade reader.
