When Stars Are Scattered GN – Dial Books releases a book about growing up in a refugee camp. Omar and his younger brother Hassan live in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. They arrived seven years ago, trying to escape the war in Somalia. They lost their father and haven’t been able to find their mother. They have been cared for by Fatima, a neighbor from their village. Omar looks after Hassan, who can’t speak due to seizures he had as a baby, so he can’t go to school like the other children in the camp. But when the opportunity arises to go back to school, and even earn a coveted scholarship to a North American university, Omar is torn. He loves school, but doesn’t want to leave his vulnerable brother alone for hours each day. All they have is each other. Is it worth the risk and heartbreak to have more? This story is told by the refugee who lived it, Omar Mohamed, and illustrated by Victoria Jamieson (Roller Girl), who brings his words to life through her art. It is also available as an audiobook.

Postman From Space GN – Holiday House, an imprint of Penguin Random House, shows that being a mail carrier isn’t as boring as it may sound. Bob is a mail carrier. A “spacial” mail carrier who delivers not just door-to-door, but also planet-to-planet. But Bob’s routine is interrupted when he is given a new postal route. He must make five deliveries to some surprising planets, and meet some strange extraterrestrials. Ranging from a planet shaped like a bone full of cosmic dogs, to a giant blue farmer, to a small cactus-like creature, Bob remains dedicated to work and unfazed in the face of these harrowing yet hilarious adventures. Its a fun story for readers of all ages, but especially for younger readers.
