Resource: COVID-19 Comic for Kids

March 9, 2020 by Brigid Alverson   3 comments

Malaka Gharib of the NPR blog Goats and Soda has created a comic that explains COVID-19 in simple terms for children. The comic can be printed and folded into a zine, and it has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and other languages and made into a video. That second link has some examples of how librarians have been using it.

Gharib is the creator of I Was Their American Dream, a graphic memoir about her upbringing as an immigrant with parents from Egypt and the Philippines; the book was chosen as one of SLJ’s Best Graphic Novels of 2019.

I work for a public library, mainly on the Children’s and YA floor, and we printed a batch of these last Thursday. They’ve been a huge hit! The children and teens that read them really do seem relieved afterwards. Many thanks to Malaka Gharib for creating this!

Would it be possible to have PDFs of each of the translations? The only items available are the instagram links. Thanks.

I gave prints of this to our Youth Services department and to our Outreach Librarian, and showed them how to fold the printout into a book. The Outreach Librarian has taken it to schools, taught students how to fold their own copies. It’s a big hit here in NW FL!
