The Picks:

Fallen Suns Volume 1 The Root TP – Chapterhouse Publishing releases the trade of their sci-fi series for tweens. Pharos is an alien warrior who came to Earth to deliver a warning: The Borealis are coming. They have been watching humanity and have come to the conclusion that they are too dangerous to be allowed to live. Instead of delivering his message, Pharos wreaks havoc across the Earth, leaving death and destruction in his wake. As he awaits execution for his crimes at the H.A.L.O military facility, Parminder Patel, a brilliant, young Equilibrium agent, arrives to learn about his history and uncover the secrets behind his dire warning. Can she convince him to rejoin the fight to save Earth, and open the way to his redemption? Originally part of a crossover event, this series is filled with complex characters and art that will appeal to sci-fi fans.

Snapdragon Volume 1 GN – First Second releases a magical realist story about a young girl finding friendship in the strangest of places and magic within herself. Middle-schooler Snap’s dog, Good Boy, has gone missing. She starts her search at the house where a witch is rumored to live. There she finds her dog recovering from being hit by a car in the care of an older woman, Jacks. Jacks doesn’t look like a witch: She wears Crocs and is internet savvy. But she also collects roadkill and sells their cleaned, articulated skeletons online, after putting their spirits to rest. Snap makes a deal with Jacks: Jacks will teach Snap how to care for some orphaned baby opossums that she rescued, and Snap will help Jacks with her work. As their friendship deepens and Snap starts to gain an appreciation for what Jacks does, she realizes Jacks can do real magic—and may also have a connection to Snap’s family. Filled with diverse characters and themes, Snapdragon is a coming-of-age story readers of any age will enjoy.
