Open Borders GN – First Second breaks down the wall with facts about immigration. Immigration has been a hotly discussed issue in the US since its inception, with policy-makers debating the questions of whether, how many, and what kind of immigrants to allow to live and work in the county. Those in favor of more open laws often cite humanitarian reasons, while those in favor of more restrictive laws argue the need to protect native citizens. Economist Bryan Caplan brings a new perspective to this debate with his argument for opening all borders, which could eliminate absolute poverty and usher in a booming economy worldwide. Caplan keeps his concepts straightforward while artist Zach Weinersmith’s illustrations help make them understandable to middle grade readers and up.

Diary – JY continues the adventures of the students of Berrybrook Middle School with a new format. This latest installment in the series features four exclusive short stories about familiar characters at Berrybrook, while doubling as a real journal for readers. There is a “One Sketch a Day” section as well as stickers and note pages to write daily entries next to Jensen’s journal pages. This new format is a great way to engage readers while also continuing the stories of everyone’s favorite characters.
