The Picks:

Cassandra Steps Out GN – Graphic Universe introduces a new series about a girl who has a special connection with animals. Cassandra is dealing with a lot of changes in her life. Her mom has a boyfriend she really likes, but his daughter can’t stand Cassandra. And her best friend is about to leave town. She also has a talent she’s been keeping secret: She can talk to animals through images and feelings they send her. She can’t stop the changes in her life, but maybe she can help out other pets and their people. She takes on the case of a lost cat after seeing its missing poster. With the help of her trusty Old English Sheepdog Miss Dolly, and some new friends she meets on the way, she is hot on the lost cat’s trail. Cassandra’s problems make her a relatable character, while her psychic connection to animals makes her appealing. Cassandra: Animal Psychic is a great addition to any graphic novel collection.

Guts GN – Raina Telgemeier, #1 New York Times-bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author, returns to Scholastic with another true story from her past. Raina wakes up with a terrible upset stomach. At first she thinks it is just a stomach bug, but she starts to have these stomach problems regularly. They also coincide with worries she has about sharing and eating certain types of food, school, and changing friendships. She must learn to manage her stress and anxiety, but it’s a problem she may not be able to handle alone. Once again, Telgemeier brings a true story that is thoughtful, charming, and funny about growing up and gathering the courage to face and conquer fear. This will be another must-have for any library or fan of Telgemeier.
