The Picks:
Box Volume 1 TP – IDW’s Top Shelf imprint brings over an award winning series from Germany. Matthew like to invent and build things. One day, he finds a box sitting in front of this house. But it isn’t some ordinary cardboard box, and Matthew has to pinch himself when it starts talking. Like Matthew, Box like to invent things, so the two become fast friends. But, when the secret about where Box came from and how he became so magical comes out, Mathew’s parents are accidentally frozen. It’s up to the two friends to find a way to unfreeze Matthew’s parents and save the day. This title was the winner of the Best Comic for Young Readers at the Erlangen International Comic-Salon, making it a great addition to any elementary library’s graphic novel collection.
Queen Of The Sea HC – Walker Books U.S. releases a fictionalized history of the exile of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth I. Margaret is an orphan girl living on a tiny island with a convent of nuns. Her peaceful days are upturned when the cold, Queen Eleanor of Albion is banished by her sister to the tiny island. But as Margaret grows closer to Eleanor, she has to grapple with the revelation of the island’s sinister true purpose, as well as the truth of her own past. She is soon faced with a perilous choice of either helping Eleanor or protecting herself when Eleanor’s life is threatened. This title is a hybrid novel, but with a fascinating subject and artwork reminiscent of Raina Telgemeier, middle school readers will want to pick this one up.
