The Picks:

Singing Rock And Other Brand-New Fairy Tales HC – First Second collects four original fairy tales for young readers. A genie wants to grant a wish to the frog who accidentally let him out of his lamp, while the frog just wants to be left alone. A witch is tormented by a persistent bard with this cheerful and awful singing, but even turning him into a rock doesn’t stop the terrible music. A wizard wants a pet. An ogre wants to make beautiful art. These wry and charming tales of the power of persistence will delight readers with lively text and expressive art. It’s a great addition to elementary and middle school graphic collections.

Trot And Cap’n Bill Adventure Volume 1 Sea Sirens GN – Amy Chu and Janet Lee put a modern spin on a forgotten series. When Trot, a Vietnamese-American surfer girl and her cranky one-eyed cat Cap’n Bill catch too big a wave, they are sucked down into a magical underwater kingdom. She befriends two Sea Siren mermaid princesses, Clia and Merla. Their kingdom is under attack by the Serpent King Anko and his slithery minions. Trot and Cap’n Bill become entangled in this ancient war of tails and fins. Inspired by Frank L. Baum’s The Sea Fairies, this graphic novel weaves Vietnamese mythology and fantastic ocean creatures in a deep sea setting into a fast-paced adventure middle school readers will enjoy.
