The Picks:

Tamamo The Fox Maiden And Other Asian Stories GN – Iron Circus Comics returns with more Cautionary Fables and Fairytales, this time originating on the Asian continent. Vengeful spirits, flying ogres, trickster tigers, helpful teapots, and ghost pepper ghosts are just some of the creatures to be encountered in this anthology of Asian folktales. Loads of lesser-known myths and legends from Tibet, India, and Indonesia fill this volume and are told by such artists as Gene Luen Yang, Nick Dragotta, Blue Delliquanti, Carla Speed McNeil, and Nina Matsumoto. This is a must for myth-loving middle schoolers.

Pilu Of The Woods GN – Oni Press journeys into the woods with a new graphic novel. After letting her turbulent emotions get to her, Willow runs away into the calm, quiet woods near her house. There, she meets Pilu, a lost tree spirit who can’t find her way back home. When Willow learns Pilu’s home is the magnolia grove her mom used to take her to, she offers to help. The two quickly become friends, but the journey is long, and Pilu isn’t sure she’s ready to return home. Willow, determined to make up for her own mistakes by getting Pilu back safely, instead puts them both in danger as her emotions bubble to the surface, suddenly taking on a physical form. As a storm rages, Willow must confront her inner feelings once and for all if she wants to get them both to safety. This is a great addition to any middle school library.
