Berrybrook Middle School Continues Alphabet With Diary
Svetlana Chmakova’s Berrybrook Middle School series — Awkward, Brave, and Crush — is an outstanding set of stories exploring just how hard it can be to deal with emotions and choices in the early teen years. They’re beautifully illustrated and a joy to read, with well-developed characters the reader can instantly relate to.
Thankfully, the series will be continuing, in a different format. Publisher JY has announced that the fourth book, Diary, is coming in October. It is “a very special journal” with a “One Sketch a Day” section, stickers, and new stories from Berrybrook.

Find out all about Peppi’s and Jaime’s project, write your own daily entries right next to Jensen’s journal pages, and take a glimpse at the new life of a familiar face who’s moved to a new town!
Diary will also be available as part of a box set containing all four Berrybrook books.
This mini-trend, of well-known graphic novelists encouraging their readers to make their own art, is a wonderful one. Similarly, Raina Telgemeier is releasing Share Your Smile later this month.
If you can’t get enough Berrybrook, the ALA has encouraging posters and bookmarks featuring the characters with the tag line “Find your voice through books” available at their online store.
