The Picks:

Rise of the Zelphire 1Rise Of The Zelphire Volume 1 Bark And Sap – Lion Forge uproots this French series for middle grade readers. Zelphire are legendary spirits that sleep in everyone and that a childhood trauma can awaken. Sylvan Khelmann is a young host of this power, trying to hide the strange, tree like features that have started growing on his body. He struggles to understand the strange abilities that come with his condition until he meets Professor Wernes, who offers to help him learn about and to control them. But they are soon pursued by the evil Dreghans, with supernatural abilities of their own and who are tracking down all known Zelphires for their own nefarious reasons. Reading like a smash up of steampunk and X-Men, this internationally popular title is finally making landfall on US shores, and is sure to be a hit with tweens.

Nightlights 2Nightlights Volume 2 Hicotea – Nobrow continues the story of Sandy with a new magical dimension to explore. While on a school trip to the river, Sandy wanders away from her classmates and discovers an empty turtle shell. Looking through the dark hole transports Sandy to a magical realm filled with sculptures, paintings and books. The shell belongs to the turtle Hicotea, and is a museum of the natural world, but one of the paintings remains incomplete. Hitoca needs Sandy’s help to complete the painting and save the wetlands from the malevolent mystical forces that threaten it. Creator Lorena Alvarez weaves a tale about our relationship and responsibilities to nature with layered storytelling and stunning art, that no middle school library should be without.
