The Picks:
Breakaways GN – First Second releases a new graphic novel for middle-grade students that positively explores the complexity of female friendships. Introverted fifth grader Faith is nervous about starting middle school. Worried she won’t fit in, she is surprised when popular eighth grader Amanda convinces her to join the school soccer team, the Bloodhounds. Faith, having never played soccer before, ends up on the C team, where the tendency is for drama over teamwork, and losing streaks are more of the norm than winning ones. Despite this, the group of ragtag teammates form strong bonds both on and off the soccer field, challenging their notions of loyalty, identity, friendships and unity. Breakways brings a diverse and spirited group of girls together in a story that looks not just at the ups and downs of middle school life, but also shows the positive side of female friendships, something that doesn’t get shown enough.
Great White Shark Adventure GN – Margaret K McElderry Books brings the expeditions of famed sea explorer Fabien Cousteau to graphic life. Fabien Cousteau has invited junior explorers Bella and Marcus to join him and his research team on an ocean journey to the coast of South Africa. There have been stories among the fishermen there of a massive white shark lurking the water. Their mission is to investigate the sightings and tag the great white so they can track and protect it. Along the way, they’ll encounter all kinds of marine life, find shipwrecks, and see the Shark Sub in action, a realistic looking robotic shark that allows the researchers to see how sharks behave when humans aren’t around. Filled with plenty of facts about sharks and other marine creatures, this title is sure to satisfy any readers’ curiosity.
