The Picks:
Crush GN – Yen Press’ new imprint JY releases the third volume in the Berrybrook Middle School series. The story switches focus to Jorge, a big guy that is genuinely sweet. He plays baseball, tries to help his fellow classmates, and just can’t understand what the big deal is about crushes. He also can’t understand why he gets so tongue-tied around Jazmine from the drama club. Trying to figure that all out is hard enough, but throw in peer pressure, and the school’s grape vine, and Jorge has his hands full. Can he help his friends and still find the words to ask Jazmine to the school’s Sports Ball? Svetlana Chmakova does it again with another great volume that sends some important messages to kids without being preachy. Every library should have this volume lined up alongside Awkward and Brave!
Bad Machinery Pocket Edition Volume 6 The Case Of The Unwelcome Visitor GN – Oni Press continues the tales of the Tackleford mystery team in their sixth volume. School is out for the summer, and with three members down, Linton, Jack and Lottie will have to work on their latest case alone. A creeping existential dread hangs over the city of Tackleford. Known as the Night Creeper, it leaves its victims in the hospital with a blank stare and a terrible smile on their face. The short-handed team will need to find the link between the Night Creeper and the other mysteries in their lives; learning why Lottie’s mum and sister have both fallen in love, why Jack is working for the team nemesis Erin Winters at the local paper, and how to save Linton’s father from the soul-sucking responsibility of a promotion, if they want to solve the season’s most dire case. Filled with humor, action and plenty of mystery, Bad Machinery continues to prove why it got on last year’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list.
