The Picks:

Lumberjanes Infernal CompassLumberjanes Volume 1 The Infernal Compass GN – Boom! Studios continues the Lumberjanes’ mix of silly supernatural and character driven stories in their first graphic novel. Camp counselor Jenny gets the girls of cabin Roanoke started on their next badge, the “Mappy-Go-Lucky” orienteering badge. Things start out fine, but the girls start to become separated thanks to a mysterious compass that is also the target of a lonely woman explorer: She is trying to steal it with the help of some weirdly polite automaton butlers. Meanwhile, Molly is becoming more insecure about the effect of her relationship with Mal on the other girls. Mal and Molly’s budding relationship gets the spotlight in this story about navigating life, love and a literal forest.

Aquicorn CoveAquicorn Cove – Oni Press returns to the fantastic worlds of Katie O’Neil with her newest graphic novel. Lana and her father return to their seaside hometown to help clear the debris from a big storm. As she explores the beach, she discovers something incredible: an injured baby Aquicorn, magical seahorse-like creatures that live in the coral reef. She cares for it with the help of her aunt, who may know more about the strange creatures than she is willing to admit. When a second storm threatens the town, Lana must help her aunt and the town realize the importance of coexisting with the sea, even if it means standing up to the people who she has relied on to protect her. Aquicorn Cove combines fantastic creatures and a environmental message to create a heartfelt story about coexistence and acceptance.
