The Picks:
Cardboard Kingdom Volume 1 GN – Knopf Books For Young Readers, an imprint of Random House, introduces a new graphic novel series for middle grade readers. It follows a neighborhood of kids who spend their summer transforming ordinary cardboard into fantastical homemade costumes and their ordinary block into a cardboard kingdom. As the sixteen kids of this neighborhood encounter knights and rogues, robots and monsters, they also end up exploring the conflicts they have with each other, their families and even their own identities, all before school starts again. Fans of Raina Telgemeier, Awkward, and All’s Faire in Middle School will love the imagination and heart in the Cardboard Kingdom.
Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #31 – Marvel pits it’s smartest middle school superhero against the dangers of disappearing bees and nicotine. Lunella, while trying to warn her mother off of using pesticides that contain nicotine, a chemical harmful to bees, comes across a plot by the supervillain Swarm, himself made up of mutated bees, to get all the students and teachers at Public School 20 hooked on cigarettes. It’s up to Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur to stamp out Swarm and expose the dangers of nicotine just in time to commemorate the World Health Organization’s No Tobacco Day! It’s a one-shot worthy of an Afterschool Special.
