The Picks:
New Shoes HC – First Second releases a heartwarming tale for young readers. Francis the donkey is the best shoemaker in the village, using the finest coconut wood for the soles, and wild tiger grass for the uppers. He embellishes his work with colorfully embroidered designs and patterns. But when he receives a very special order from Miss Manatee, calypso queen and his personal hero, Francis goes on a quest to make the perfect pair of shoes. With no tiger grass, he must journey deep into the jungle, and leave his village for the first time. Through Francis’ adventure, young readers will see a variety of animals and learn a valuable lesson about embracing other people’s differences. Early reader collections will want to pick this one up.
Sci-Fu GN – Oni Press brings out the ultimate mash-up mix from cartoonist Yehudi Mercado. In 1980s Brooklyn, young mix-master Wax scratches the perfect beat and accidentally responds to an intergalactic challenge that summons a UFO. He along with his sister, The D, best friend Cooky P, and current crush Pirate Polly, are transported to the robot-dominated planet of Discopia. Mistaken by the locals as a master of Sci-Fu, Wax must learn to master the intergalactic musical martial art with the help of true Sci-Fu master Kabuki Snowman. He must stop the Five Deadly Dangers and their leader Choo Choo, so he and his friends can save the Earth. This genre-smashing title could only come from the mind of the creator of Pantalones, TX and Rocket Salvage. Tweens will love it.
