This Week’s Comics: Big Bad Tanuki

Longer days mean more time to enjoy reading the new releases out this week. Archie Comics Publications kicks off a new story arc that will change Riverdale forever in Archie #21. BOOM! Studios’ imprint Archaia has a new title for emerging readers with Apple and An Adventure, while DC Comics releases a DC Super Hero Girls featuring Wonder Woman in Summer Olympus.

But Fox’s plans change when three adorable chicks hatch and call him “Mommy.” French cartoonist Benjamin Renner has created a hilarious and touching story about parenthood that both parents and kids will love.

Kitaro And The Great Tanuki War SC – Drawn and Quarterly continue their release of the adventures of Japanese classic monster boy Kitaro. This time Kitaro and his allies face the tanuki, a raccoon-like trickster and well-known in yokai legends. The furry beasts have built an army intent on taking over Japan by using the power of the blood moon to awaken a monstrous catfish that lives in the depths of the Earth. The catfish’s twisting causes earthquakes that threaten to destroy all of Japan, but with all of his allies captured, Kitaro must face the tanuki army alone. The variety of Japanese monsters and Kitaro’s abilities to fight or befriend them make this a great series to keep coming back to read.
