The Picks:
Kid Sherlock #1 – Action Lab Entertainment puts a new spin on the Holmes and Watson relationship. New student John Watson is having problems fitting in at Baker Elementary. It doesn’t help that he’s a dog and has gained the attention of the class bully Kyle. On the playground, he makes friends with Sherlock Holmes, a young boy who is quite clever but so lost in his own thoughts that he is oblivious to the people around him. Watson joins Sherlock as he investigates the mysteries around school, starting with identifying the bad smell that has been afflicting their classroom. There have been several different iterations of the Holmes and Watson relationship, including Sherlock as a dog, but this is the first one where Watson is the dog! This series is a great way to introduce young readers to some classic characters.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #21 – Marvel Comics gives Squirrel Girl’s male sidekicks the spotlight. Squirrel Girl, Nancy and Mary go to the Negative Zone for the weekend, leaving the city in the hands of Koi Boi, Chipmunk, Hunk and Brain Drain. But things go south the moment Squirrel Girl leaves. A crime wave begins that Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk are powerless start, and Brain Drain is kind of a pain to be around. Though friendship, fights, and friendship fights, the boys must figure out a way to keep the city the same as how Squirrel Girl left it. This stand-alone issue focuses on the supporting cast and develops them in fun and surprising ways. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl never fails to entertain, and this issue is just another example.
