The Picks:
Disney Manga Magical Dance Volume 1 GN – Tokyopop brings out a Disney manga with an original story. Rin wants nothing more than to be a dancer. She joins a troupe, but she turns out to have two left feet. No matter how much she practices, she just doesn’t seem to get any better. Discouraged by the lack of results, Rin is ready to give up, but Tinker Bell, impressed by the girl’s determination, grants her a wish. She gives Rin magical cards that allow her to call up her favorite Disney characters who help her dance her way back to her dreams. While the titles that retell Disney movies are entertaining, these titles that include original characters and stories interacting with Disney characters are much more fun to read.
Brave GN – Yen Press returns to the world of Berrybrook Middle School for a follow-up to the popular Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova. Jensen from the art club is still on high alert from the looming threat of sunspots. He goes to Jenny and Akilah from the school newspaper to spread his message. The girls learn that Berrybrook’s resident bullies have targeted Jensen as their next victim and decide to use their positions on the paper to shine a light on the issue. But when a different issue causes a rift in their friendship, working together on the story seems impossible. With the bullying escalating, Jenny and Akilah must work out their differences or else Jensen will be left to face this fate worse than sunspots on his own. Chmakova created a wonderful world in Awkward, making this follow-up all the more delightful.
