The Picks:
Real Friends GN – First Second releases a graphic novel about real friends and why it’s worth finding them. Friendship can be an emotional roller coaster ride, especially early in life when one is still learning to navigate it’s tricky waters. We follow little Shannon from kindergarten through fifth grade as she experiences the happiness and heartache of making first friends and deals with cliques and bullies as she struggles to stay in “The Group.” This honest and heartfelt story from bestselling author Shannon Hale and artist LeUyen Pham is a good illustration, as well as a reminder, of how hard it can be to learn what real friends are, and why finding them is worth the journey.
5 Worlds Volume 1 The Sand Warrior GN – Random House Books for Young Readers releases a graphic novel that takes not one, not two, but five worlds to tell it all! Unless five ancient and mysterious beacons are lit, it could mean the end of the Five Worlds. Three unlikely heroes will need to come together, discovering there’s more to themselves and their worlds, when war breaks out. Oona Lee, the clumsiest student at Sand Dancer Academy, is a fighter with a big destiny. An Tzu, a boy from the poorest slums, has a surprising gift and knack for getting out of sticky situations. Jax Amboy is a star athlete beloved by an entire galaxy—but what good is that without real friends? These three are forced to go on an epic quest filled with magic and adventure that will change them and their worlds forever.
