Blog Tour: Gene Luen Yang on Coding
In addition to being an award-winning cartoonist, MacArthur Fellow, and the Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Gene Luen Yang is a former high school computer science teacher, and he brought that expertise in both coding and writing to his graphic novel series Secret Coders (ably illustrated by Mike Holmes). So of course he’s going to be popping up during National Computer Science Education Week. In fact, he’s on a blog tour, and he’s stopping off today at Good Comics for Kids to drop some philosophy on us:
That’s an insight that Gene really expands upon in Secret Coders, which brings readers a few steps into the world of a coder’s brain. (Curious? Check out Esther’s review of the first volume and this preview and interview at EW.com).

Like any other subject, coding may not be for everyone, but everyone should have the opportunity to try it and find out for themselves. National Computer Science Education Week is all about encouraging the teaching of computer science in schools; there’s more info about that on the Code.org website, and the First Second folks have put together a blog tour home page with some fast facts and links to the other stops on the tour.
