The Year of Pokemon
Earlier this year, Nintendo announced a new Pokèmon game, Sun and Moon, would be coming out in the fall. To keep the excitement for this and for the 20th Anniversary for the game franchise going, Viz Media has made some announcements of their own while also adding to their already extensive line of Pokèmon titles.
It starts in the summer, with the announcement that Viz will be bringing the creators of the Pokèmon Adventures manga, Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto, to the San Diego Comic-Con. Kusaka and Yamamoto are the creative team behind all the Pokèmon Adventures game adaptations, such as Ruby and Sapphire, Firered and Leafgreen, Emerald, Black and White and X & Y, as well as the newest arc Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They will be appearing at the Viz Media booth for signings and will participate on a Pokèmon panel with Viz Media editors as part of Pokèmon’s 20th Anniversary celebration. San Diego Comic Con will take place July 20-24 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA.

For the early fall, Viz Media will release a box set of their Pokèmon Pocket Comics Vols 1-2. Each book is filled with four panel comics strips, vital statistics, trivia, puzzles, and quizzes. The first volume features Pokèmon from Black and White while the second is about the Legendary Pokèmon. Then coming in December, a third volume of pocket comics will be released, filled with the Pokèmon from X & Y.
Also available in December is a book for foodies and Pokèmon fans alike. The Pokèmon Cookbook: Easy & Fun Recipes is filled with a variety of dishes designed to look like characters and items from the Pokèmon franchise. With more than 35 recipes, you can start “catching them all” with dishes like Pokè Ball sushi rolls, Pikachu-style ramen and Meowth potatoes. The recipes are perfect for parties, weekend activities and powered-up lunch boxes.
It’s hard to believe that Pokèmon has reached its 20th anniversary. It’s one year older than my oldest daughter. That should make me feel old. But I’d rather grab another volume of Pokèmon Adventures or Pocket Comics and just not think about it.
