The Picks:
Baba Yaga’s Assistant GN – Candlewick Press brings the story of a Russian folklore icon to Western readers. Masha is not like other children. She needs an adventure, so she braves a haunted wood filled with terrifying beasties to match wits with the witch Baba Yaga. Armed with the many things her grandma taught her, she gets into Baba Yaga’s house-on-chicken-legs, intent on becoming her assistant. To earn her place, Masha must pass a series of tests, outfox a territorial bear, and make dinner—despite children being on the menu. With a smart female lead and a strange and spooky witch to outwit, this is a title tweens will love.
Scratch9 Cat Of Nine Worlds TP – Scratch9 is back with a whole new adventure. Scratch, the cat with the ability to summon any of his nine lives, is in a bit of a fix. His evil opposite Strick has sent him back in time to the ice age. While his ability won’t help against Strick, he’s gonna need it as he claws his way through history to get back to his best girl Penelope and make the world safe again. This trade paperback is Scratch9’s first full-length graphic novel, continuing his exploits from the floppy comics. In the tradition of such animal superheroes as Mighty Mouse, Underdog, and the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Scratch9 is an exciting adventure readers of all ages will enjoy.
