This Week’s Comics: Seki Gone Adrift
BOOM! Studios explodes with the new releases this week: They have four regular titles, including Bravest Warriors and Steven Universe, as well as a new Adventure Time mini-series. Dark Horse releases the collection of Plants vs Zombies Timepocalypse, while Titan Comics has the third volume of Dragons: Riders of Berk. It’s perfect timing with How To Train Your Dragon 2 winning the Golden Globe this last week.

The Picks:
Adventure Time Marceline Gone Adrift #1 – BOOM! Studios brings back Meredith Gran to pen another adventure of the two most popular ladies of the Land of Ooo. Marceline, the Vampire Queen of the Land of Ooo, is on a mysterious rampage. Princess Bubblegum steps up to try to stop her and save her but instead accidentally propels her out into space, stripped of her powers. Guilt-ridden, Princess Bubblegum sets out to rescue Marceline in a journey that will test the power of her mind—and their friendship. The Adventure Time mini-series have done a fantastic job in giving the spotlight to other characters in the universe, but especially so to the female characters. It’s great that these two get to return and revisit their friendship.
My Neighbor Seki Volume 1 GN – Vertical Comics finds the ultimate classroom distraction. Toshinari Seki knows best how to avoid boredom and kill time during class. At his desk in the back of homeroom, he creates all sorts of games, dioramas, and plays with toys, much to the dismay of his neighbor, Rumi Yoyoi. She finds herself pulled into his world, causing her to often miss what’s going on in class. My Neighbor Seki is a very funny title. Most of the gags are visual, though Yoyoi’s narration really adds to the humor. Vertical doesn’t give age ratings for their titles, but it’s definitely appropriate for ages tween and up. Readers of any age will enjoy it though.
