This Week’s Comics: Over the Wishing Box

With Halloween officially in the rear view mirror, the holiday season can begin in earnest. BOOM! Studios releases trades of both Adventure Time and the Regular Show mini-series Skips. Dynamite Entertainment gets into the holiday spirit with the one shot Li’l Vampi Holiday Special 2014, and Perfect Square continues to celebrate 40 years of Hello Kitty with the new graphic novel Work of Art.

Over The Garden Wall #1 – BOOM! Studios brings another Cartoon Network series to print. Wirt and Greg are brothers who find themselves lost in the Unknown, a strange forest adrift in time. They travel the foggy land, searching for a way home, and are helped by a shadowy Woodsman and an ill-tempered bluebird named Beatrice. Along the way, they encounter all manner of adventures. Pat McHale, who worked on Adventure Time and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, created and wrote both this comic and the animated mini-series set to air on Cartoon Network. This oversized one-shot will easily appeal to readers of all ages.

Penny Dora And The Wishing Box #1 – Image Comics releases a new all ages title that skirts the darker side. Just before Christmas, young girl Penny Dora discovers a mysterious box on her front doorstep. The magic box has the power to grant wishes, but the old adage “be careful what you wish for” exists for a reason, and Penny is about to find out that out. Written by Michael Stock, the story was inspired by both his daughter and the myth of Pandora. This fantasy adventure will appeal to fans of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Ted Naifeh’s Courtney Crumrin.
