The Picks:
El Deafo SC/HC – Amulet Books releases a graphic novel memoir about overcoming hearing loss at a young age. Cece Bell is an author/illustrator who lost her hearing as a child but was given back the ability to hear through the very powerful-and very awkward-hearing aid, the Phonic Ear. At school, she just wants to fit in and find a true friend, but the Phonic Ear lets her hear some things she shouldn’t, so she becomes isolated from her classmates. Once she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear, she becomes El Deafo, Listener for All, and can declare a place for herself in the world. Stories like this, about overcoming a disability, are important for both those with and without the disability. It helps those without to understand what those with are going through, and gives those with the hope that things will get better, something that doesn’t get said often enough.
Aw Yeah Comics And Action TP – Dark Horse makes the blockbuster Kickstarter-funded comic available for everyone! Action Cat and Adventure Bug are amazing superheroes who fight against the dastardly deeds of Evil Cat, such as his attempt to destroy the city of Skokie with a giant pancake or trap Action Cat in his own apartment with hot lava! And who is the girl cat who claims to be Action Cat? This volume collects the first four issues funded by the Kickstarter last year. Created by Eisner Award winners Art Baltazar and Franco, this volume also includes bonus stories from other Aw Yeah contributors such as Scoot McMahon, Denver Brubaker, Alejandro Rosado, and Kurt Wood! Filled with short, funny stories, this is a volume that is sure to put a smile on your face.
