The Picks:

Steven Universe #1 – Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe debuts at BOOM! Studios. Steven Universe is about a boy named Steven who inherited a special gemstone from his mother and became a Crystal Gem, one of four warriors who protect the world from evil threats. With Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, Steven uses his magical powers to fight monsters that threaten the small beach community of Beach City. Starting in this issue, Steven wants to enter the Beach City Bike Race, and he just makes the cut-off ages, but everyone else is worried since the other bikers will be a lot older than him. Steven’s friend Connie agrees to help him through good ol’ exercise, but Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl have other ideas. This series was created by Rebecca Sugar, who subsequently became the first female creator of a Cartoon Network series. The comic will feature not just mini-comics but also recipes, games, and more! With solid doses of humor and drama, Steven Universe is a title anyone will enjoy.

Howtoons [Re]Ignition #1 – Howtoons returns as a comic series from Image Comics. Tuck and Celine are a brother-and-sister team that use everyday objects to invent toys after being challenged by their mother to make something “other than trouble.” But they are in trouble this time, as their parents had put them in suspended animation to ride out the ecological apocalypse. When the kids wake up, their parents are gone! They then have to make their way across a brave and terrifying new world to find them, with only their Howtoon projects helping them to survive. The Howtoon series is a great way to not only show kids about science and engineering but let them build the same projects. There’s nothing like hands-on to make learning fun.
