The Picks:

Dragon Girl, Volume 1: The Secret Valley – Andrews McMeel releases a fantasy to delight dragon lovers. While foraging for food in the forest, eleven-year-old orphan Alanna accidentally stumbles upon a cave full of dragon eggs. The eggs hatch with no mother dragon in sight, so Alanna decides to take care of the babies herself. She creates a clever costume so the babies think she’s a dragon too, and she begins the hard work of dealing with their large appetites and accidental fire burps. Alanna’s costume is so good that when a mother dragon finally comes to claim the babies, Alanna is swept up along with them! She is taken to Dragon Rock, a mysterious magnetic force that dragons to a magical, untouched valley. There she learns that dragons aren’t as dangerous as all the stories say—but will her older brother Hamel, who wants to be a knight more than anything, believe her? Dragon Girl has all the marks of a great story, with a strong heroine, big adventure, and of course, dragons! There are preview pages at the link.

Scratch9: Cat Of Nine Worlds #1 – Scratch, the cat with ability to summon any of his nine lives, is back from Hermes Press. Continuing the adventure that began in his Free Comic Book Day issue, Scratch has to go back up against the evil Dr. Schrodinger, who is out to even the score. He has teamed up with Strick, a cat like Scratch who has power over his nine lives. Scratch may have finally met his match with this new formidable enemy. This issue is the first of a monthly eight-issue story arc, and it features a variant cover by Kevin Eastman of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame. The original Scratch9 was a fun series, so it’s great to see another one. You can check out a preview of the first issue at the link.
