Good Comics For Kids at WonderCon 2013

This weekend WonderCon, a mostly comic convention run by the same folks who run San Diego Comic Con, will be held again at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. If you’ll be attending this year, and are interested in finding out more about what’s available in kids comics up to Tween, or panels that kids would be interested in attending, here are a list of interesting panels happening over the weekend.

Friday, March 29

12:30pm    Rm 208   Avatar: The Search for Zuko’s Mom—Get an exclusive look at the new comic series from Dark Horse comics.

12:30pm    Rm 300AB   CAC #1: Comics in Higher Education—Part of the Comics Arts Conference happening all weekend. This panel examines the teaching of comic books in the classroom and variety of opportunities for publishing in comic studies.

02:00pm    Rm 300AB   Quick Draw!—Three artists compete to draw things the audience comes up with the fastest. Very fun and funny panel to watch.

03:00pm    Rm 207    Tales of Xillia—For fans of video games. The “Tales of” series is celebrating its 15th Anniversary with the latest Western inspired release.

05:00pm    Rm 300AB  Regular Show—Get the lowdown on the Cartoon Network series with scoops on panelists’ favorite episodes, and see a sneak peek of the April Fool’s Day episode.

Saturday, March 30

11:00am    Rm 210A    Creating Kids Comics—Find out what it takes to make good comics for kids with the creators of several popular titles, including Fraggle Rock, Mouse Guard, and My Little Pony.

11:30am    Rm 207    Shifty Look: Bravoman—Find out more about the web comic Bravoman from the Editor-in-Chief. Get a look at the first episode of the new animated series based on it, and see a Q&A with some possible big announcements.

12:00pm    Rm 300AB  Adventure Time—Find out what’s in store for heroes Finn and Jake in the new episodes, with a peek at how the show comes to life, exclusive clips, and a Q&A. This panel filled up fast last year, so get there early.

02:30pm    Rm 208    Bongo Comics Turns 20—Get the lowdown on the last 20 years of the making of some of the best humor comics in the business and what’s in store for the next 20!

02:30pm    Rm 300DE Cartoon Voices—Hear a demonstration of speaking cartoon voices from six of the top professionals in the craft.

04:00pm    Rm 210BCD  Cartoon Design for Kids—Learn techniques used in drawing funny cartoon characters and draw your own using basic geometric shapes and more at this workshop for kids.

04:00pm    Rm 300AB  Teen Titans Go!—Hear a Q & A with producers and voice actors from the new show and see an exclusive sneak peek at the show’s premiere episode coming to Cartoon Network in April.

Sunday, March 31

11:30am    Rm 213    Warner Archives Collection Presents the Saturday Morning Extravaganza—Relive your childhood or introduce your kids to some of your favorite cartoons in this panel. See a presentation of both animated and live-action shows from a selection of Hanna-Barbera, Rankin-Bass, and Warner Bros. Saturday morning classics.

11:30am Rm 203 The Secret Origin of Good Readers—Panelists discuss how educators, librarians, retailers, creators and publishers work together to put comics into the classroom as an innovative tool to promote reading and literacy. The multimedia presentation will be followed by a Q&A session on using the graphic medium as a learning tool.

12:30pm    Rm 213    Redfining All-Ages Comics with KaBoom!—Join writers and editors from BOOM! Studios’ all-ages imprint kaboom! for a discussion on the future of all-ages comics and an exclusive look a the new series from kaboom!, Regular Show.

02:30pm    Rm 208    IDW: Behind the Hasbro Titles—Join editors and creators behind the Hasbro titles G.I. Joe, Transformers, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for announcements and insider information.

02:30pm    Rm 213    Capacity for the Fantastic: Writing for Teens and Tweens—Hear writers of popular tween and teen novels talk about writing fantasy novels for middle school kids and up.

Wondercon will also be hosting a Children’s Film Festival, featuring short films from around the world, in Rm 303AB Friday-Saturday until 7:00pm and until 5:00pm on Sunday. You can see a full rundown here. Other video events include DCU: Superman Unbound on Friday at 6:00pm in the Arena. Friday night at 7:00pm in Rm 300AB and again at 2:00pm on Sunday also in the Arena will be a premiere screening of the newest episode of Doctor Who. On Sunday at 2:30pm in Rm 300AB is the screening of LEGO Batman: The Movie-DC Superheroes Unite.
