The Picks:
Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales Volume 2 Big Bad Ironclad GN – Amulet Books continues to make history fun to read! This time it’s the civil war as Nathan Hale presents “strange but true” facts in an engaging, funny format. This volume covers the ironclad steam warships used during the Civil War. The larger-than-life real historical characters covered include the ship’s inventor with a knack for blowing things up (a historic Mythbuster!) and only 100 days to complete his project, and William Cushing, a prankster who pranked his way through the war! While kids may groan at the thought of reading about history, this volume with its surprising true facts and funny, brave characters will surely draw kids in and help them realize history can be fun! This is a perfect addition to a middle school library or collection.
Golden Twine GN – Who knew string games could be dangerous? Golden Twine is the first book in the new series Cat’s Cradle. Suri is an orphaned girl who earns a living with a traveling caravan. But in this steampunk world where monsters co-exist with humans, she yearns to be a monster tamer. She brags about her first successful taming to a young customer, and he runs off spooked, dropping his ball of golden twine. When he and his family return that night, Suri realizes that they are catsiths, dangerous feline monsters that can disguise themselves as humans, and she has something they want; the twine! Filled with adventure and monsters, this title is not only well suited for a late elementary and middle school library or collection, but for Halloween collections as well!
