Preview: Disney’s Four-Color Adventures, vol. 1
Time for some vintage Disney goodness: Disney’s Four-Color Adventures, vol. 1, which came out a few weeks ago from BOOM! Studios, collects all of Dell’s Four Color #4 and #13 (yes, the name of the comic was “Four Color,” I guess because it was published during the Age of Duotone). According to David Gerstein’s very informative introduction, Four Color #4, which was published in 1940, was the first all-color Disney comic in English. In fact, the Donald Duck comics in this book were originally drawn as black and white newspaper strips and were colored when they were rerun in Four Color (which explains why Donald Duck’s coat is black, rather than blue—that’s how artist Al Taliaferro drew it in black and white, Gerstein explains, and the Dell folks decided it would be too much trouble to recolor it).
Each page of this comic includes two vintage gag strips, so there’s a lot of yuks here. Read and enjoy!
